Why is There Fungus on Soil? Will it Affect Seed Germination And Seedling Growth?

Today marks day 8 of attempting to grow spinach and lettuce. There isn’t much activity in the raised garden beds, but I am not concerned about that because we are still within the window for both of the seedling types to germinate. The spinach takes roughly 7-14 days to germinate and lettuce takes around 5-10 days. I will be worried and possibly have to start over if I don’t get any action after 14 days.

What I have been noticing for the past couple of days, and concerned about is what looks to be fungus on soil. I did learn that it’s a type of saprophytic fungi and is not harmful to the plant or soil in most cases. It typically feeds on organic matter in the soil, but if it becomes severe, it can lead to rotting roots.

There are several reasons why there is mold on soil. One of the reason is overwatering. I don’t think I have been over watering, but who knows? I am considering letting the soil dry in between watering. Other reasons can be humidity, poor drainage soil, etc. I did remove the mold manually, but as you can see in the video, it’s coming back. Some of you suggested trying hydrogen peroxide for plants, so I will try it and see if that will keep the mold at bay, because it was also growing next to the baby cabbage plant.
