Winter sowing is an easy and space-saving method to start seeds outdoors during the colder months, using recycled containers as mini greenhouses. It’s perfect for gardeners who want to get a head start on the growing season without needing a large indoor setup. This year, I’m giving winter sowing a try for the very first time! Since I have a small backyard, I’m keeping it simple by focusing on just three crops: cabbages, beets, and celery. These vegetables thrive in cooler weather, making them ideal candidates for this method.

For my setup, I’m using a water bottle to sow my cabbage seeds. The bottle acts as a self-contained greenhouse, letting in sunlight while protecting the seeds from harsh weather. For the beets and celery, I’ve repurposed a plastic egg carton. Each compartment is perfect for holding a small amount of soil and a few seeds, creating individual seed-starting cells. I love that this process uses materials I already have on hand, reducing waste and saving money.
