My Garden’s Aftermath Following The Snowstorm

After enduring a couple of small snowstorms, my container garden is looking a bit rough, but not entirely hopeless. My cabbages have been growing for five months now, yet they still haven’t formed proper heads. I’m unsure if I should wait longer or harvest them as they are. Despite the cold, they remain green and intact, which is surprising given the fluctuating weather. My parsley, on the other hand, has taken a major hit—it’s now flattened against the soil and looks completely lifeless. The garlic leaves are also wilted and appear dead, making me question whether I’ll get any bulbs when it’s time to harvest. The arugula bed suffered the worst, as every plant looks dead with no signs of bouncing back.

My green onions, which originally grew from kitchen scraps, have become unidentifiable in the garden. Thankfully, I did manage to harvest some a couple of months ago before the snow hit, so at least they weren’t a total loss. However, there is some hope among the winter-sown seeds. The cabbages, beets, and cilantro that I started are germinating despite the cold, which is encouraging. Seeing those tiny seedlings emerge in the middle of winter gives me some reassurance that not all is lost in my garden. I’m curious to see how they develop in the coming weeks as temperatures shift.

As for my carrots, they’re still in their baby stages, and I have no idea if they’ll reach maturity. The slow growth makes me wonder if they’ll have enough time to develop before it gets too warm. This season has been a learning experience, showing me both the resilience and fragility of my plants. While some crops have clearly struggled, others are proving to be surprisingly hardy. I’ll continue to monitor everything closely and decide whether to replant in the coming months. Gardening in winter has definitely tested my patience, but it’s also given me valuable insights into what can survive the cold.
