It is the lightning capital of the United States. Central Florida — from Tampa to Titusville — has the added distinction of being called “Lightning Alley.” Because of the frequency of electrical storms, our state leads the nation in fatalities and injuries caused by lightning.

Though the Tampa Bay area is sometimes referred to as the “Lightning Capital of the World”, it is more accurately called the “Lightning Capital of North America” if measured by average number of days with thunderstorm activity per year.
