In this video, I show how to start watermelon seeds. The first thing I do to increase germination rates is soaking seeds. I believe this helps the seeds wake up. When to start seeds is a good question to ask. I start my seeds 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost date. This will help to prevent overgrown seedlings. I will not have to repot the plants also. Another benefit is avoiding the bad with or changes in temperatures. I normally put the plants in the ground a few weeks after the last frost date. I sift the soil to make sure the mulch in the Happy Frog potting mix is out of the way of the seeds. This tip will help increase germination rates of the watermelon seeds. One this step is finish I have to fill the pots with the soil. When doing this it is important to pack the potting mix to avoid air gaps in it. I plant two seeds in each pot. I will keep the strongest seeding and discard the weaker one. After planting the watermelon seeds I will use vermiculate or ground cinnamon to cover the potting soil. This will help keep fungus from growing on the soil mix and the vermiculate will also help with moisture retention. Lastly it is important to keep the light fixture two inches over the plants to avoid leggy seedlings. Following these tips will help you grow something tasty.
