In today’s video I am showing how to soil prep for planting corn. The first thing I have to do is to remove collard greens. When I do this I make sure to shake the soil away from the plant. I also have to remove the mulch first to make sure it does not mix in the soil. Once the collard greens have been removed I can start fertilizing the raised beds. Corn is a grass and it’s a heavy feeder so nitrogen is very important. Garden tone and blood meal are some fertilizers I use. I use fish scraps to go in the trenches. The Native Americans buried the fish scraps in the soil and plant corn over top of it. This provides even more nitrogen for the plants. I also use compost to cover the top of the soil and then lay the Christmas tree mulch over that. It is very important to use garden lime to cover the fish scraps. This will hide the fish smell so it can’t be dug up by animals. This strategy will help us to grow something tasty.
