HERE WE GO!!! Context: Two days short of a year since witness testimony began, closing arguments will begin Monday in the YSL trial in Atlanta. Testimony in what had become Atlanta’s trial of the 21st century began Nov. 27, 2023, when the internationally acclaimed, award-winning rapper Young Thug and several others were facing multiple organized crime, weapons and drug-related charges. Young Thug – real name Jeffery Williams – had already spent more than a year and a half in jail while awaiting trial. Prosecutors have been attempting to show YSL (Young Slime Life) is a criminal street gang responsible for numerous offenses. Defense attorneys say YSL is not a gang but simply the name of a record label, Young Stoner Life. Now, with plea deals arranged last month for the musician himself and three other co-defendants, only Deamonte Kendrick (aka Yak Gotti) and Shannon Stillwell (aka SB) remain. Yak Gotti spent his 32nd birthday in court on Thursday, as Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker, prosecutors and attorneys went through a final set of administrative issues before closing arguments begin Monday. After prosecutors wrapped up their case last week, defense attorneys declined to call any witnesses or present any evidence. Weinstein took to X, formerly Twitter, and said he would ask for a directed verdict for some of the charges his client is facing. A directed verdict is usually made after the plaintiff – in this case, Fulton County DA Fani Willis’ office – has presented all of its evidence but before defendants put on their case. As part of his plea deal, Young Thug has to stay away from his hometown of Atlanta for the next 10 years; can’t flash any criminal gang signs (real or suspected); perform 100 hours of community service for the next 15 years; and can’t have any guns around, according to the conditions of his plea deal and probation. The trial’s jury selection lasted longer than any other in Georgia history, and actual witness testimony itself will likely surpass state records. Both records were set by the Atlanta Public Schools teacher scandal and trial of 2014-15.
